Safe Paddling

When paddling on your own, it's important to follow these safety tips to make sure you have an enjoyable and safe experience:

Inform

Always let someone know your paddling plans, including when you'll be paddling, where you'll be paddling, and for how long.

Be Aware

Before standing up on your paddleboard, make sure you're in deep enough water and clear of any obstructions.

Give Space

Keep a safe distance from other water users, especially near commercial harbours and marinas.

Maintain

Take good care of the equipment, as this will ensure it takes care of you.

Adjust

Wind can impact your speed, stability, and safety when paddleboarding. British Canoeing recommends sheltered water with winds below Force 3 (8-12 mph) being suitable for paddleboarding. However, wind direction and gusts matter too, so check the forecast for the area where you'll be paddling. Be prepared to adjust your plans for safety.

Research

When choosing a location, consider the wind, weather, and accessibility. Coastal waters and larger lochs can be more exposed to the elements and can have dangerous offshore winds. Lochs and lochans can offer more protection but may have poor accessibility.

Be Honest

We are all heroes in our own stories but sadly we are not all superhuman. Be honest with yourself about your abilities. If you're ever in doubt, it's better to stay on shore.
